About
When I first decided to become a librarian, although I had a host of reasons, logical rationalizations and explanations for my decision, I was at times baffled by the disconnect between my perception of myself and my perception of what a librarian looked like, both literally and figuratively. I know my friends and loved ones were definitely baffled (“You? a librarian?” I heard that refrain often, still do). During the last year I’ve seen and met many, many librarians both in person and on the web and I’ve noticed a common theme among them and myself: almost all of us are unlikely librarians. The majority of librarians I know are loud, rambunctious, passionate, personable and intelligent creatures who work in libraries because they love being surrounded by knowledge, culture, community, and technology, and perhaps most importantly of all, they love helping people. So rather than finding myself sticking out like a sore thumb, I’ve found a whole community of people who are librarians like me: everyday, average, unlikely librarians.
