I just joined SLA today and it’s DC chapter and its DC chapter mailing list… so now I get great heads up emails like the one announcing Diane Rehm’s show tomorrow about The Role of Libraries in Economic Hard Times. I’m hoping to get more involved in SLA and DC/SLA as I’ve moved away from my active involvement in ALA.
I found the ALA just didn’t offer support for the areas I’m currently involved in professionally (information architecture, taxonomy and metadata for enterprise web sites) and also it was geographically and financially challenging to be involved at the level I was (which wasn’t even very much!) as the majority of ALA events require travel. I really like that SLA has active local chapters and I would like to get involved in that way. I’m still renewing my membership to ALA, just not to all of the divisions and roundtables that I was part of during the past few years. Hopefully, if ALA can start offering more virtual or local participation options or more content related to my particular stripe of librarian, I can get more involved with that organization in the future…. Luckily they come to DC every few years so I’ll see ya’ll in June 2010!
